Pedro Corniel, a 31-year-old police officer working out of the 48th Precinct, pled guilty to perjury on Nov. 18. He will be sentenced on Jan 19, and faces up to a year in jail.
According to the Bronx District Attorney’s office, Corniel gave false testimony to a grand jury on Aug. 18, in connection with the events leading up to the arrest of a burglary suspect.
Corniel told the jury he saw the suspect in the basement of 2282 Arthur Ave. Witnesses later shed doubt on this claim.
In a statement, Bronx DA Robert Johnson, said: “We would hope that this case helps to
get the word out that we will not turn a blind eye to this kind of conduct which jeopardizes cases as well as the careers of those who should know better.”
Corniel has since resigned from the police force. Charges against the burglary suspect were dismissed.
